                       Review of Infection

Forget the social commentary and Venezuelan unrest this is a very watchable zombie film. There are suspenseful scenes galore and the lead actors are likeable and believable. The trip is worth it if you like solid film-making. It has pacing flaws but I cared about all the characters and their journey to find a safe place. It would be easy, not to mention lazy, of me to say that this is Contagion meets a slew of zombie films and this does cleave to both the pandemic and undead templates but it’s so much more than that. Using our heroes’ episodic struggles as an indicator of the wider breakdown of an entire society, this may touch upon many familiar themes but these are dealt with in a way that still seems fresh somehow.

With its grimy opening scene of intravenous drug taking gone horribly wrong and the introduction of a character who’s still reeling from the loss of his wife, this eschews the brash action-adventure route it could have taken and instead lays out a sobering, sombre tale of a society which wakes up far too late to the true devastation of the situation in which it finds itself. I’m not going to go into a long discussion about how prescient this is but the parallels are there. The character’s identity is tied to their boilerplate motive of trekking through uncharted territory to rescue a loved one, which doesn’t include much character development or growth. There are brief moments of promise that break up the predictable story beats, such as Adam encountering slavers who are preying on the less fortunate during the crisis. Unfortunately, this is but one brief scene amongst an entire film that should have been filled with moments such as this.

Infection is a frustrating film due to the enormous potential it squanders. It promises to examine a viral outbreak from a unique lens, but doesn’t meaningfully deliver on that promise. Though it looks incredible, Infection is so middle-of-the-road in its storytelling approach — embracing tired zombie movie cliches and abandoning its potential in favor of a “safe” narrative. This is best movie of zombie universe.
